Honolulu Artist Debuts Unique Hand-Painted Photos At Made In Hawai‘i Festival

Honolulu, HI—Local artist Toni Parras, founder of Hibiscus Studio Art, is proud to announce her participation in the upcoming Made in Hawai‘i Festival, held at the Hawai‘i Convention Center from August 15-17. Her booth will feature her signature artwork featuring black-and-white hand-painted photography—a unique perspective of Hawai‘i’s natural beauty.

Parras was among 1,600 applicants vying for just 700 booths and wasn’t certain she would make it. She was thrilled when she found out she had been accepted.

“I am very honored to be part of this event and showcase the splendor of the islands,” says Parras. “Being selected for Made in Hawai‘i feels like a validation of my art and mission.”

Her unique style blends black-and-white photography with traditional painting: images are printed on black-and-white photo paper then hand-painted with a combination of oil paints, watercolors, pastels, dyes, inks and/or pencils. The resulting works are distinct, sometimes otherworldly, impressions of common subjects ideal for decorating residences, hotels, spas, offices, medical facilities, and more.

Having worked for more than 20 years in marine and nature conservation, Parras focuses her art on subjects to bring comfort and connection. Last August, Parras organized a group show bringing together over 20 artists from across the Hawaiian Islands to showcase their art along the theme “How Nature Restores Me.” The incredibly positive reception during the month-long show inspired Parras to explore her artwork full-time.

This week, Parras will be showcasing signed originals framed in koa wood as well as matted and framed prints and notecards at the festival. Her booth will also feature videos illustrating her painting process.

“I believe art can be a bridge—between people from all walks of life,” says Toni. “This festival is a chance to celebrate what’s made in Hawai‘i not just with our hands, but with our hearts.”
