Whanganui’s UTOPIA Features Rare Photographic Works By David Lupton
UTOPIA Studio | Gallery presents Beyond All Things, a photographic exhibition by New Zealand multidisciplinary artist David Lupton, on display from 4 September - 1 November. Tucked into central Whanganui’s Guyton Street among galleries and shops, the studio is the perfect spot to enjoy art and maybe even grab a coffee next door from Me2U Gifts.

David Lupton is a multidisciplinary artist and photographer whose career has often unfolded quietly behind the scenes. Thoughtful and expansive, his practice has spanned book illustration, documentary projects, and collaborations with poets, musicians, and fellow artists. Until now, much of his work has rarely been seen in public.
In July 2023, David experienced a profound turning point that reshaped the course of his life and work. From that deeply personal space, Beyond All Things emerged, his first public body of work created in the wake of a major life event. Shot in digital black and white using multiple exposures, the series explores the cosmic, the mysterious, and the space between life and death.
The exhibition includes two special events: David will host a floor talk in the gallery on Sunday 7 September at 11:00am, a perfect opportunity for anyone interested in art - including Father’s Day visitors.
On Saturday 25 October at 2:30pm, he will lead a photography workshop, beginning with a gallery introduction, followed by a photo walk at Castlecliff Beach, and concluding with coffee and discussion at Citadel Café. Both events are open to photographers of all levels, and David welcomes all weather conditions, believing stormier days often yield the most compelling images.
