MEFA National Schools Festival 2025 Returns To Wellington September 16 - 19, With NZ’s Top Music Mentors
WELLINGTON, NZ — [16 September] – The MusicWorks Ensemble Festival Aotearoa (MEFA) returns to Wellington in 2025, reaffirming its reputation as Aotearoa’s premier national school ensemble festival. Designed for school ensembles across traditional, jazz, and blues styles, MEFA offers a vibrant, non-competitive environment that blends world-class performance opportunities with deep educational enrichment.
Unlike traditional music festivals focused on mainly on competition, MEFA is built on a foundation of mentorship, education, and community. With over 60 workshops led by some of New Zealand’s most accomplished musicians and educators—including members of the NZSO, Royal New Zealand Air Force Band, NZ Army Band, NZSM tutors, and leading educators—the festival nurtures every level of ensemble from beginner groups to elite performers.
“MEFA’s strength lies in creating a space where learning thrives, community is fostered, and students of all levels can grow through music,” said Darren Smith MEFA Festival Director. “It’s more than a festival—it’s an educational movement.”
2025 Festival Highlights Include:
- Adjudicated Performances with personalised group mentoring
- 60+ Expert Workshops covering conducting, improvisation, instrumental mastery, and more
- Four Professional Gala Concerts showcasing world-class New Zealand talent

What Schools Are Saying:
"Our students had a fantastic time
performing and attending MEFA. The opportunity to watch
professional concerts and then take workshops with the same
musicians was a highlight. MEFA is now a permanent fixture
in our calendar."
