71 New Public Artworks Added To National Register Of 20th Century Public Art

Public Art Heritage Aotearoa New Zealand (PAHANZ) has added a further 71 works from throughout Aotearoa New Zealand to its website https://PublicArt.nz, an online register of New Zealand’s 20th Century Public Art.

Included in these newly uploaded works are the first works to be included from the West Coast of the South Island, with Westport and Greymouth being represented. Other centres include: Auckland, Coromandel, Thames, Hamilton, Taihape, Taupō, Te Awamutu, Motueka, Nelson, Richmond, Tākaka, Ashburton and Christchurch.

Thanks to funding received from the Lotteries Environment & Heritage Fund, PAHANZ was able to research and document these works. The 71 were prioritised to reflect works that were at risk; those that were likely to gain category 1 & 2 significance from the organisations independent assessment panel; and those that increased the diversity of artists already represented on the database.

Sue Elliott, co-director of PAHANZ said: “Many 20th Century works have been destroyed, covered over, or simply lost. Others remain undocumented and at risk due to a lack of public knowledge of their significance and value. Our website is New Zealand’s first national register of these cultural treasures; and launched with 380 works in mid-2023.

“Like so many public works of art, these works tell a story about their local community and reflect our shared social history,” Elliott said.

The works include works by public art heroes such as: Barry Brickell; Barry Lett; Chris Booth Christopher J. Finlayson; Denis O’Connor; Dick Frizzell; Fatu Feu’u; Fred and Brett Graham; Gwen Wanigasekera; Jim Allen, John Hovell; Llew Summers; Marilyn Rea-Menzies, Mollie Steven, Molly Macalister; Paul Walshe; Ralph Hotere; Rewi Thompson; and William Parkinson.

Co-director, Bronwyn Holloway-Smith said: “Thanks to the Lotteries Environment and Heritage Fund, we haven’t just uploaded a further 71 artworks to the register, but also 37 new artists’ biographies.”

“We now have 492 works researched and documented on our website, but we still have records of another 1000 works that need to be researched and added. Some of these are lost, hidden, or destroyed, and others we haven’t yet confirmed the status of.

“There is still a huge amount of work to do,” said Holloway-Smith.
