ZURU Nightglow Is Flying Home

After three years at Claudelands Oval, ZURU Nightglow is flying home, returning to the University of Waikato on Saturday 21 March 2026.
Balloons Over Waikato has confirmed the event will shift back to the University, following strong public feedback and a desire to welcome more people to the celebration. ZURU Nightglow has long been a crowd favourite during the festival, featuring a mix of live music, choreographed hot air balloons, and the SkyCity Hamilton fireworks.
“We’re excited to bring ZURU Nightglow back to a place that holds so many memories for our community,” says Steve Gow, Chair of Balloons Over Waikato. “The University setting offers more space, energy, and the sense of tradition that makes ZURU Nightglow so special. We’re grateful to Claudelands Oval for hosting us over the past three years.”
“In 2026 we’re also shaking things up, with ZURU Nightglow kicking off the festival rather than closing it. Starting the week with such a spectacular event means our pilots and balloonists will be fresh, energised, and ready to put on an unforgettable show.”
While it will remain a free ticketed event, returning to the University will increase the capacity - opening the experience for more to enjoy the magic.
Shaun van Praagh, Director, Development & Event Services at the University of Waikato is looking forward to the return of ZURU Nightglow. "We’re pleased to welcome the ZURU Nightglow back to our Hamilton campus in 2026. This iconic event not only brings our community together in a unique and memorable way but also delivers meaningful social and economic benefits for the wider region."
The event site at the University will be fenced to ensure attendance stays to those who have valid tickets and ensure a safe environment for whanau to attend.
More dates and ticketing details will be announced later this year.
