Mim Jensen Releases Cathartic New Single 'Sidekick' Out Now

Aotearoa/New Zealand indie savant Mim Jensen returns with her first release since March’s sophomore EP, today unveiling her new single and video, ‘Sidekick’.
Driven by gritty guitar lines and sharp lyricism, ‘Sidekick’ places Jensen’s delicate yet jagged-edged vocal front and centre, all wrapped in her trademark nod to the 90's. The track dives into the act of pretending not to care, only to reveal the truth to everyone around you while posing the vulnerable question: “Once you see these insecurities I have, will you still love me anyway?”
Jensen has a knack
for transforming emotional conflict into something tender
and powerful, and ‘Sidekick’ is no exception. Its video
captures this duality with a dose of humour: Mim arrives at
a house party dressed as an olive, quickly realising no one
else is in costume. Feeling exposed and out of place, she
wrestles with impostor syndrome, until a stranger’s act of
kindness helps her embrace her true self, culminating in her
leading the house party band.
“Writing the song
helped me shed light on a tough feeling,” says Mim.
“It was a really good reminder to not take myself too
seriously but still honour my fragility in the moment. It
was actually a really fun song to write, and one of my
favourite songs to play
live.”

The release continues the momentum of Mim’s acclaimed EP Shadow of the Gift, which arrived in March. Since then, she’s shared stages with local indie heroes The Beths, supported Shihad on their farewell tour at Spark Arena, and delivered a standout performance at the Going Global Showcase.
One of the most exciting indie voices rising out of Aotearoa, Mim Jensen is known for her introspective storytelling and heartache-fuelled songs. With ‘Sidekick’, she marks the beginning of a new era, one that intertwines fragility with strength, and sensitivity with empowerment.
