Championships Off To A Record-Breaking Start

The 2025 Aon New Zealand Pool Rescue Championships started today, Friday 26 September 2025, at the Sir Owen G. Glenn National Aquatic Centre in Auckland.

Athletes of all ages came from Surf Life Saving clubs across the country to compete over three days. Races included: 50m Brick Carry, 4 x 25m Brick Relay, 50m Rescue Medley Brick, 4 x 50m Medley Relay, 100m Patient Tow with Fins, 50m Swim with Fins, 6 x 50m Mega Relay, and 200m Super Lifesaver.

It was a fun and exciting day for all involved, and several New Zealand records have already been broken, plus one new world record.

Day 1 Highlights:

- Amelia McEwan from Mount Maunganui SLSC has broken the NZ record for the under-14 female 50m brick carry with a time of 34:08. The previous record was set in 2018 by Black Fin Zoe Crawford.

- Piha SLSC’s team (D. Gear and C. Mahoney) broke the NZ record in the 150m Patient Tow with Fins with a time of 1:35:19

- Mount Maunganui SLSC’s team (S Thompson, I Herbert, A McEwan, F Cummings) broke the NZ record in the 4 x 50m Medley Relay 1:56:99. They also broke the NZ record in the 4 x 25m Brick Relay with a time of 1:17:15

- Lucas Wang from Wainui SLSC broke the NZ record in the 50m Swim with Fins under-13 male, with a time of 23:17

- Charlotte Willough from Midway SLSC broke the NZ record in the 50m Swim with Fins under-13 female, with a time of 21.95

- Isaac Gear from Piha SLSC broke the NZ record in the 200m Super Lifesaver (under-19 male) with a time of 2:12:20

- Molly Shivnan from Omanu SLSC broke the NZ record in the 200m Super Lifesaver (open female) with a time of 2:21:20

- Louise Clark from Mairangi Bay broke the NZ record in the 200m Super Lifesaver (open male) with a time of 2:06:05

- Sarah Windsor from Alexandra Headlands SLSC raced in the open Super Lifesaver event and achieved a new (provisional) Masters world record with a time of 2:45:09

Surf Life Saving New Zealand’s GM for Sport, Zac Franich, said; “Today was an outstanding start to the championships. The energy from athletes, supporters, and our superb volunteers and event officials really set the tone for the weekend. It’s fantastic to see so many of our youngest participants giving it their all and having fun.”
