Finalists Announced For The 2025 New Zealand Screen Awards
The New Zealand Screen Awards (NZSA) are proud to announce the finalists for 2025, showcasing the breadth and depth of talent from across New Zealand’s screen industry.
From more than 700 entries across 57 categories, this year’s finalists highlight the vibrant storytelling, creativity, and technical excellence that continue to drive New Zealand’s film and television landscape.
Nominees represent an impressive spectrum of content spanning free-to-air networks (TVNZ 1 & 2, Three, Sky Open, Whakaata Māori), subscription television, digital platforms and streamers including NEON, TVNZ+, ThreeNow, MĀORI+, RNZ, and Coconet TV, alongside the New Zealand film industry.
“We’re delighted to announce this year’s finalists! The response to the awards has surpassed expectations - especially with the exciting inclusion of film, which has brought a wonderful new energy to this year's awards. Each of our finalists stand as a testament to the talent and innovation that make our screen community so extraordinary,” commented Kelly Martin, NZSA committee member and CEO of South Pacific Pictures.
The NZSA now recognises content created for theatrical release alongside programmes produced for broadcast, streaming and digital platforms. This evolution reflects the dynamic nature of today's entertainment landscape and the increasing crossover between film, television and digital storytelling. Now, both big and small screen achievements will be celebrated under one unified banner.
This year, the NZSA proudly shines a spotlight on theatrical achievements, acknowledging the evolving nature of the entertainment landscape. Eligible entries must have had their first New Zealand theatrical release or broadcast between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2025.
Leading the pack the nominations are Tinā, The Rule of Jenny Pen and Ka Whawhai Tonu, each earning nine nominations. Lee Tamahori’s The Convert and We Were Dangerous also feature strongly, with six nominations each.
Both Tinā and Ka Whawhai Tonu are joined by We Were Dangerous in the category for New Zealand Film Commission Best Feature Film.
"It's wonderful to see film making a strong comeback at the New Zealand Screen Awards, particularly with such an impressive array of work on display. Despite the challenges faced by the industry both locally and globally this year, there's much for those in front and behind the camera to be proud of. These awards highlight the remarkable achievements and celebrate the resilience and creativity that define our industry," comments Annie Murray, New Zealand Film Commission CEO.
The performance categories recognise an impressive mix of established names and rising stars.
In the drama field, the NZ On Air Best Drama award will be contested by audience favourite The Brokenwood Mysteries (South Pacific Pictures / TVNZ 1 & TVNZ+), acclaimed crime series The Gone (Kingfisher Films / Keeper Pictures / Southern Light Films / TVNZ 1 & TVNZ+), the Queenstown-set A Remarkable Place To Die (Screentime NZ / TVNZ 1 & TVNZ+), and Māori comedy-drama Dead Ahead (Hi Mama Productions / TVNZ+).
In film, Elizabeth Hawthorn (The Moon Is Upside Down), Victoria Haralabidou (The Moon Is Upside Down), Anapela Palata’ivao (Tinā) and Erana James (We Were Dangerous) compete for Equity New Zealand Best Actress award, while Geoffrey Rush (The Rule of Jenny Pen), John Lithgow (The Rule of Jenny Pen), Ed Oxenbould (Head South) and Julian Dennison (Uproar) headline the Best Actor in a Feature race.
On the television side, Antonia Prebble (Double Parked Season 2), Madeleine Sami (Double Parked Season 2) and Miriama Smith (Dead Ahead) are nominated for Best Actress in a Series, while Stephen Lovatt (Shortland Street), Richard Flood (The Gone Season 2) and Xavier Horan (Dead Ahead) vie for Best Actor in a Series.
In the unscripted categories, The Restaurant That Makes Mistakes, The Traitors New Zealandand Match Fit: Union vs League will go head-to-head for Best Reality Series, while Te Ao with Moana, The Hui and Mata with Mihingarangi Forbes are recognised as contenders for Best Current Affairs Programme.
This year, Best Presenter News and Current Affairs nominees include Ryan Bridge, Jack Tame, Moana Maniapoto and John Campbell. Also recognised with nominations, the Reporter of the Year category highlights journalistic excellence with finalists Indira Stewart (1 News), Paula Penfold (ThreeNews), Michael Morrah (NZME) and Barbara Dreaver (1 News).
Māori storytelling is at the forefront, with Māori All Blacks: Bound by Blood, Homesteads Season 2, Dead Ahead and Mata Reports recognised in the Te Māngai Pāho Best Māori Programme category. In the Te Māngai Pāho Best Reo Māori Programme nominees Ruamata: It’s More Than Hockey 2, Te Matatini 2025 and End of the Valley are celebrated for their commitment to te reo Māori on screen.
The NZSA will also honour outstanding contributions to the industry with the prestigious Screen Legend Award, alongside the finalists for the publicly voted Personality of the Year category, both to be announced at a later date.
Winners will be revealed at the New Zealand Screen Awards (NZSA) ceremony on Friday, 21 November 2025 at Auckland’s Viaduct Events Centre.
The 2025 event will be hosted by comedian Pax Assadi.
