Young Drummer Awarded FAME Year 13 Performing Arts Scholarship

Aquinas College student Lucas Shepherd has been selected as the second recipient of the FAME Year 13 Performing Arts Scholarship, receiving $5,000 to support his tertiary studies in music at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology in 2026.
The scholarship, administered by the Acorn Foundation in conjunction with Creative Bay of Plenty on behalf of the FAME Trust, recognises a Year 13 Western Bay of Plenty student pursuing tertiary study in preparation for a career in the performing arts.
Lucas is a founding member of Beat Street, a Tauranga-based percussion and bucket drumming group that has taken social media by storm. Since April 2024, the group has built a global following of over 565,000 online followers with 60 million views across TikTok and lnstagram. Their energetic, creative performances have led to invitations to perform nationally and internationally, including appearances at Chiefs Rugby matches, Auckland FC games, festivals, and community events.
"This scholarship will ease financial pressure, allowing me to focus fully on my studies and community contributions," Lucas said. "I'm passionate about growing as a musician and technician, helping enrich New Zealand's cultural life through performance, education, and innovation. I want to show anything is possible."
Beyond his viral success, Lucas teaches drums locally, led the Aquinas College Arts Committee, and volunteers in the community. He was recently awarded Arts High Honours at school for his musical success with Beat Street.
Lucas will undertake a New Zealand Certificate in Music, Level 5, at Toi Ohomai, furthering his commitment to a career in drumming and sound technology.
Aquinas College described Lucas as "humble, compassionate, incredibly talented and determined to reach goals despite personal barriers. He has a passion for music and a willingness to share with others which is inspiring and impactful. Lucas uses his talents to uplift and support others, and is an encouraging role model."
The Acorn Foundation congratulates Lucas on receiving this award and looks forward to following his musical journey.
