BNZ Breakers To Honour Abercrombie With Special Jersey Retirement Ceremony

The BNZ Breakers are proud to announce that the legendary #10 jersey worn by club icon Tom Abercrombie will be officially retired on Friday, 30 January, 7:30 PM, at Spark Arena.

The retirement ceremony will take place after the high-stakes matchup against Melbourne United, honouring the most decorated player in franchise history.

Abercrombie, who called time on his illustrious career at the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, spent his entire 16-year professional journey with the Breakers. He remains the club’s all-time leader in points (4,448), appearances (443), steals (302), and three-pointers made (568). A cornerstone of the Breakers’ "Golden Era," Abercrombie was instrumental in securing four NBL Championships and was named Grand Final MVP in 2011.

“Tom Abercrombie is the heart and soul of this organization,” said BNZ Breakers Owner Marc Mitchell. “His loyalty to this jersey is unparalleled in modern sport. We are retiring the number 10 to honour the standard of excellence and integrity Tom set for sixteen seasons. It is only fitting that no Breaker will ever wear number 10 again.”

"He was always a favourite of the fans - so we look forward to the Breaker Nation filling Spark Arena to give him the tribute he deserves.”

The evening of 30 January will be a celebration of a "one-club man." Fans are encouraged to secure tickets and join us as we celebrate a legendary career with an epic post-game ceremony. Relive iconic highlights, hear heartfelt tributes from former teammates, and witness the #10 banner rise to the rafters in a moment fans will never forget.

“Tom has been the ultimate professional and a leader for generations of Kiwis coming through our ranks,” added President of Basketball Operations Dillon Boucher. “To see his jersey join the likes of Paul Henare and CJ Bruton in the rafters is a moment every Breakers fan will want to witness. It is the highest honour a club can bestow on a player.”
