Love Of Faith, Love Of Country: Why This National Muslim Convention Matters Now More Than Ever

A Message of Unity at a Time of Growing Polarisation

At a time when societies across the world are grappling with increasing division, conflict, and polarisation, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community New Zealand will host its 37th Jalsa Salana (Annual Convention) on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th January, bringing together more than 700 attendees from across the country.

The Annual Conventions are one of the most important gatherings of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community worldwide, focused on promoting peace, dialogue, and service to humanity, regardless of faith or background.

Opening with Faith and Patriotism Hand in Hand

The convention will commence with the raising of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community flag alongside the New Zealand flag, symbolising that Islam teaches “Love for one’s country is part of faith.”

This opening ceremony reflects the Community’s long-standing commitment to religious freedom, civic responsibility, and loyalty to New Zealand.

“At a time when migration, faith, and identity are being used to divide people - both globally and here in New Zealand - we want to clearly demonstrate that devotion to faith and love for country are not opposites, but partners,” said Mustenser Qamar, Imam and Spokesperson of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community New Zealand.

Responding to Global and Local Challenges

The convention comes amid heightened global tensions, war, displacement, and the rise of rhetoric that targets minority communities. In New Zealand, recent public discourse— including anti-immigration narratives and campaigns driven by groups such as Destiny Church - has highlighted the need for calm, principled conversations rooted in respect and shared values.

“History shows us that when societies allow fear and anger to dominate, peace is the first casualty,” said Mr Bashir Khan, the National President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community NZ.

“Islam teaches us that true faith is expressed through compassion, justice, and service to others—especially during times of uncertainty and turmoil.”

Public Guest Session: Peace Amid Global Turmoil

On Saturday, the convention will host a guest session open to the public from 11:30am to just before 1:00pm, followed by lunch.

The session will explore the theme “Peace Amid Global Turmoil”, examining how communities of faith can contribute positively to social harmony, counter extremism, and foster unity in diverse societies like New Zealand.

Members of the public, community leaders, and those curious about Islam are warmly invited to attend at the Due Drop Event Centre, Manukau. Those interested are requested to RSVP to rsvp@ahmadiyya.nz

“This convention is not just for Ahmadis,” added the National President.

“It is for anyone who believes that dialogue is stronger than division, and that peace is something we must actively work for - together.”
