ULTRA New Zealand Brings Iconic Music Festival, And Major Economic Boost, To Wellington

For the first time ever,ULTRA New Zealandis coming to Wellington – bringing one of the world’s most iconic electronic dance music festivals to the Capital.

The oneday international music festival will be held on Friday 10 April along the Wellington Waterfront, and is expected to attract 23,000 attendees, with over half of the audience being domestic and international visitors to the city.

The influx of visitors is forecast to generate high hotel occupancy, increased patronage for hospitality and retail businesses, and heightened activity across transport and services. Because of the scale of the event there will be some disruption in the area.

Mayor Andrew Little says ULTRA will bring vibrancy and excitement to the Capital in what promises to be a huge weekend for Wellington.

“ULTRA is a major international event that will bring thousands of people to the Capital to enjoy the best of Wellington – vibrant, fun and adventurous with plenty to see and do, whatever flavour of fun.

“Starting with ULTRA on Friday, the weekend will be fizzing in the Capital. Wellington’s Central Pulse hosts the Magic at TSB Arena for the start of netball’s ANZ Premiership on Saturday, and basketball’s Saints take on the Manawatu Jets on Sunday.

“Also that weekend the 21st WONCA World Rural Health Conference brings 800 attendees to Tākina, the Brass Band Championships will blast the Michael Fowler Centre, the Hurricanes take on Blues at Hnry Stadium, and our treasured Wellington Zoo will celebrate its 120th Anniversary.

“This bumper weekend provides a welcome boost to the local economy through visitor spend on hospitality, showcasing Wellington as a premiere events destination, and contributes additional spend for local business during the normally-quieter shoulder-season.

“There’s so much on, across so many activities, it’ll be a weekend to remember in the Capital. Check out these events, get out and soak up the energy and excitement as we host thousands in our town,” says the Mayor.

The four large-scale stages operating across the waterfront will mean some restricted access in the area during the event, and for set up and pack down.

Some restricted access starts around the site from 30 March, and from 7pm onThursday 9 April – 6pmSaturday 11 April, there will be a partial temporary closure of the Wellington Waterfront between Waitangi Park andOdlinsPlaza, includingTePapa Promenade and part of Taranaki Street Wharf.There will be clear diversions in place for pedestrians and cyclists.

All businesses on the Wellington Waterfront remain open for business, and residents will have access.

Harbourside Market will be relocated to Reading Cinema car park on Wakefield Street on Sunday 12 April.

Public transport:

Road closures may be disruptive during this time, so take note of detours when heading into the city. Pedestrians,cyclistsand e-scooters should take extra care duringtemporary roadchanges.

Sound checks and production lighting for ULTRA New Zealand’s four stages will be tested in the days and nights leading up to the event. There will also be a fireworks display from a barge in the harbour near Chaffers Marina between 11.30pm and 11.55pm to close out the festival.
