Takapuna Golf Course Welcomes Local Board Decision
Following the unanimous decision from Kaipātiki Local Board to retain golf at A.F Thomas Park, Takapuna Golf Course welcome future developments while preserving publicly accessible golf.
“This has come as a great relief to the community” says Takapuna Golf Course head greenskeeper Steve Dowd. “As a place that caters for everyday hard-working Kiwis this guarantees that they can still come enjoy golf at this public facility, while still delivering for other needs”.
Negotiation of the new lease and the details of a redesigned course are still to be finalised, however Dowd is confident that this will be achieved in a ongoing positive partnership with Auckland Council.
“We want to thank the members of the Kaipātiki Local Board as well as the Auckland Council Officers for all their work on the future of A.F Thomas Park”, says Dowd. “We’ve learned a lot from each other and look forward to a meaningful collaboration to deliver valuable outcomes for the parks surrounding residents, business owners and everyone who enjoys what A.F Thomas Park has to offer.”
Takapuna Golf Course is New Zealand’s most popular golf course with over 100,000 visitors annually. Golf has existed at A.F Thomas since 1931 and Dowd looks forward to the course celebrating its centenary anniversary.
“A lot can happen in a hundred years, however the one thing that’s always remained the same is that this is a place we’re people come together to enjoy time together. I reckon that’s something worth retaining” says Dowd.
