Booking The Trend: Surging Ticket Sales Show Books And Big Ideas Are Hot Tickets In Auckland

At a time when attention spans are short and reading is supposedly in crisis, tickets are flying out the door at unprecedented speed for Auckland Writers Festival Waituhi o Tāmaki. Over 60% of available tickets have already sold, with the 2026 event, which takes place from 12 – 17 May, shaping up to be one of the best-attended in the Festival’s history.

Sell out events include the much-loved Festival Gala Night, as well as the fun alternative for younger audiences A Big Night Out for Little Bookworms, Dame Jacinda Ardern, Florence Knapp, Charlotte Grimshaw, Gilbert Enoka and Tāma Iti. Many other events are on the cusp of reaching sold-out status.

“In an uncertain world, New Zealanders are coming together to explore big ideas, dive into story and adventure, spend time with favourite authors and the characters they’ve created and soak up the rich discussions and immersion in the world of books that AWF provides,” says Managing Director Catriona Ferguson. “We’re heartened to see that this year’s programme is delivering exactly what our audiences are looking for!”

While there is currently plenty of capacity across the programme - for both big names and more intimate sessions - those still making decisions shouldn’t leave them to the last minute to avoid disappointment.

More than 25% of the Festival is free and un-ticketed, including STREETSIDE: BRITOMART. The programme for this vibrant appetiser, which takes place on Friday 8 May, has been released today. It sees writers, comedians and artists fill the streets of Britomart with bite-sized events.

No tickets or registrations are required, Aucklanders should just turn up between 6 – 9pm and enjoy the ride, which includes readings celebrating Tāmaki Noir in the Tyler St loading dock, literary ping pong MC'd by Te Radar and the unexpected combo of Afrofuturism and astrology.

This year’s Festival programme also sees the introduction of Plot Twist, a whole new arm of the Festival aimed at rangatahi. A Q Theatre takeover, held on Sunday 17 May, the programme bends genres, breaks rules, and rewrites the Festival script. Plot Twist-goers can catch international stars R.F. Kuang, Mieko Kawakami and Nikita Gill, appearing alongside top local talent including Lore Olympus’ Rachel Smythe, Matariki Bennett and Dominic Hoey.

It's a chance to connect with fellow readers over sessions that include Weird Girl Lit, The Rise of Romance, Tarot and Writing, Queer the Page and a BookTok Meet-Cute in the venue’s foyer. Every inch of Q will be packed with surprises around every corner, including free zine making, DJs and more.

The event is a great way for readers who haven’t experienced a literary Festival before to experience the buzz. Accessibly priced tickets start from just $10.

Anyone wanting to secure tickets to a sold-out event should ensure they have signed up for the Festival’s weekly newsletter where any extra capacity is announced. The new AWF26 app also gives purchasers the option to safely on-sell tickets they can no longer use.

The full 2026 Auckland Writers Festival programme is available writersfestival.co.nz. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster or by calling 0800 111 999.
