FABLES' Debut Album Change Is A Slow-Moving Beast Is Out Now On All Streaming Services

April 24, 2026: Fables releases their much anticipated new album, ‘Change is a Slow Moving Beast’; available now on all streaming platforms, limited edition vinyl and CD via Home Alone.
Produced by Dave Khan, ‘Change is a Slow Moving Beast’ features newcomer Fables’ distinctive, confessional dream-folk songs, laced with alt-americana storytelling and pop sensibilities. Recorded with an incandescent ensemble of musicians including bassist Cass Basil (Tiny Ruins, King Sweeties), multi-instrumentalist Dave Khan (Marlon Williams, Reb Fountain), and drummer Arahi Whaanga (Te Tokotoru, Pony Baby), the record was mixed by Australian audio engineer and musician Dan Luscombe (The Drones).
"It’s been an absolute privilege to make a body of work where I feel like I haven’t had to compromise on the vision. What I imagined in my head has come to fruition through the combined talents and efforts of my musical whanau; together we’ve made an album that I’m really proud of." - Jess Bailey
Heralding in a new dawn for Fables, ‘Change is a Slow Moving Beast’ conjures the colour of confessional folk songs and the rural, range-roving melodies of alt-country. These songs feel nostalgic and resonate so close to the bone precisely because they are self-portraits; so honest and raw that they reflect ourselves in the painting.
"It makes me feel like crying every time I think about it. These songs and my experiences were treated with reverence and respect and through the process of recording an album we’ve made a beautiful thing out of some hard times. I’m excited and honoured to share this work." - Jess Bailey
‘Change is a Slow Moving Beast’ already feels like a classic. There is an art to cultivating dream pop; music that feels familiar yet innovative, approachable yet interesting and complex in its simplicity. Fables has, perhaps unwittingly, stumbled upon the key to the canvas. Through a willingness to face her challenges with candor and curiosity, she has woven her own palette; designing a collection of uplifting songs that feel uniquely hers yet familiar, jubilant and welcoming.
Alongside her album release, Fables shares her new single, ‘Minibar’; triumphant pop at it’s finest, precisely because it rings anthemic whilst dwelling in the grey. The melody is sweet, the chorus a hook, the soundscape lush and effortless, and yet there is something deeper, moving beneath the surface that resonates, truly, with our humanness.
"You know that feeling when you walk away from a scene imagining all the things you wished you’d have said but didn’t or would say if you were only given the chance. 'Minibar' sings of having said the unspeakable, called someone out or said it like it is and having lived to tell the tale, made it far enough away from the scene to stop and catch your breath amid the adrenaline rush of speaking your truth." - Jess Bailey
No longer quashing down that which is hard to swallow, you sing it out, and behold the movement in the undercurrent was your own reflection, with a heartbreaking and familiar story to tell.
