Southlanders Invited To Support The Future Of ILT Stadium Through New Community Fund

Southlanders are being invited to help secure the future of ILT Stadium Southland through a new community fund that provides a simple way for locals to give back to one of the region’s most used facilities.

The Friends of the Stadium Fund has been established in partnership with the Southland Foundation and launched with an initial $100,000 endowment, made possible through a generous anonymous donation from a Southlander. The fund is designed to provide an ongoing, long-term source of support for the stadium.

Each year, more than 550,000 people walk through the stadium’s doors. Users range from young children playing sport for the first time, to high-performance athletes, schools, community groups, families and event audiences.

ILT Stadium Southland General Manager Jo Hutton says the fund reflects the importance of the stadium to the region.

“This is one of Southland’s most used community facilities. We see every day how many different people rely on the stadium for sport, events, connection and activity,”

“The Friends of the Stadium Fund gives people a practical way to support a place they already use and value. It will help us maintain the stadium, keep it accessible, and plan confidently for the future.”

The fund is managed by the Southland Foundation and operates as an endowment. Donations are invested, with returns used over time to support the ongoing maintenance, improvement and sustainability of the stadium, while protecting the original gift.

Southland Foundation General Manager Robyn Koehler says the focus is firmly on creating lasting impact for ILT Stadium Southland and, ultimately, the Southland community.

“In time, the aim is to grow this community group fund to a level where it provides a sustainable funding stream supporting ILT Stadium Southland as a vital community asset. It is a wonderful and meaningful way for those of us who have benefited from this venue over many years to give back, ensuring future generations have the same opportunity to enjoy and use such a fantastic and valued facility.”

Funds raised will support both small upgrades and long-term improvements, including maintaining well used spaces, supporting affordable community access, and keeping courts and facilities open and fit for purpose.

Contributions are open to everyone, with donations starting from as little as $5.

“This is about collective support,” Hutton says. “Whether someone gives a small amount or something more significant, it all contributes to the stadium’s future.”
