Before Anne, there was the other Boleyn girl.
Based on Philippa Gregory’s million copy best-selling novel, The Other Boleyn Girl, Wellington Repertory is bringing to the stage this large-scale production for their official centenary celebration over King’s Birthday weekend.
The king, his mistress, her brother, his lover. Based on Philippa Gregory’s internationally best-selling novel, The Other Boleyn Girl is a brilliant recreation of intrigue at the Tudor court – a racy and riveting drama of events that changed the course of English history. This stage adaptation by Mike Poulton premiered at Chichester Festival Theatre in 2024.
The setting is 1521 - 1543 in the Court of King Henry VIII, and the Boleyn’s family home, Hever Castle. Henry VIII’s court is a stage for love and treachery, where the weapons of choice are sex, marriage, and the executioner’s axe. As Henry’s mistress, Mary Boleyn is a pawn in her family’s lust for power. Queen Katherine of Aragon hasn’t produced a male heir, and Mary’s ruthless uncle scents the chance of putting his niece on the throne. But Henry’s wandering eye has fallen on another: Mary’s headstrong sister, Anne, whose ambition not only threatens to destroy her bond with Mary and their brother George, but shakes the foundation of Church and State. Can Mary take charge of her own fate?
Director of Wellington Repertory’s production of The Other Boleyn Girl, Ewen Coleman, is also the longest serving member of Wellington Repertory’s committee, having already served 49 years as the society enters its 100th year, he will mark 50 years of service in 2027. Thus it is fitting that his production coincides with the society’s centenary celebrations, which are happening over King’s birthday weekend, during the show’s 10 performance run.
Don’t miss your chance to see this large cast bring this lavish production to the stage, which brings to life a key moment in England’s history, while celebrating 100 years of local Wellington theatre history.
The production opens on Wednesday 27th May and runs to Saturday 6thJune at the Gryphon Theatre, 22 Ghuznee Street. Tickets are available at www.wellingtonrepertory.org.nz.
