Chief Executive, Education Review Office
The Deputy State Services Commissioner, Ross Tanner, announced today that Dr Judith Aitken would complete her term as chief executive and chief review officer of the Education Review Office (ERO) at the end of the year. Dr Aitken has been a Public Service chief executive for more than 12 years. She was the Secretary of Women's Affairs from 1988 to 1992, and she has been the chief review officer at ERO since then. "Under Dr Aitken, ERO has established itself as a department dedicated to the interests of parents and students in the New Zealand education system. The department has also provided leadership by promoting standards to which schools and educators aspire," Mr Tanner said.
"Dr Aitken has also established a role for formal evaluation of policy outcomes - in other words, asking the question: 'do these policies deliver outcomes on the ground?' - in New Zealand. In that regard, she has led the advance of public policy in New Zealand."
Mr Tanner said that an acting chief executive would be appointed to head ERO from the beginning of next year.
