NZ-US Educational Relations On Agenda At Wellington Conference

The likely shape of future educational relations between New Zealand and the United States is one the themes being examined this week at a prestigious international gathering in Wellington.

The conference, Fulbright in the 21st Century, brings together more than 60 leading educators from throughout Asia and the Pacific and will be held at the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa, through until March 16.

The conference focuses on the future direction of the elite Fulbright programme, one of the region’s oldest and most highly-regarded sources of international educational exchange.

In addition to New Zealand, participants at the Wellington conference have been drawn from Australia, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.

"This is a period of incredible ferment for higher-learning throughout the region," said Jennifer Gill, the Executive Director of Fulbright New Zealand. "Fulbright continues to move with the times, as it has for more than a half-century now."

Included among the notable participants are: Victoria Murphy, Presidential Appointee to the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board; Thomas Farrell, Vice President Institute of International Education, in New York; Patti McGill Peterson, Executive Director of the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars, in Washington DC; Marianne Craven, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Academic Programmes, at the US Department of State, in Washington.
