Government Support Of School Choice Applauded
12 April 2002
“The continual support by the Government of Kura Kauapapa schools is welcomed by the independent sector,” said Joy Quigley, Executive Director of Independent Schools of New Zealand.
Kura provide parents with the ability to send their children to a school that best meets their needs. They are a classic example of the importance of choice and it is wonderful see this Government promoting them.
“We look forward to them extending the privilege of state-funded choice to all children in the compulsory sector,” said Ms Quigley.
Pre-school children and tertiary students are currently funded to access their school of choice. Only a privileged few in the compulsory sector can, notably those attending state-funded state operated kura and Vicky Buck-type Discovery Schools.
Fairness, equity and logic demands that all children should be funded in the same way to attend the school that their parents believe suits them, not just a select few.
We look forward to working with Government to ensure that state-funded choice in education for all children becomes a reality.
