3,000 Students At Centennial University Games
Waikato University will host 3,000 students at the Centennial University Games from April 25-27.
"I am very excited that we will have so many students competing and enjoying the camaraderie of tertiary sport", said Darel Hall President of University Sport New Zealand.
"This is the most students at any Games, which is testament to the hard work of all the Hamilton-based organising team, and the wider Hamilton and Waikato community. Any event of this magnitude only happens because local people get behind it"
The Student Uni Travel New Zealand University Games originated in 1902 as an Easter Tournament hosted by Canterbury against Auckland, Otago, and Victoria in three sports.
Otago currently holds the shield and Auckland has the largest team entered. One hundred years on, the Student Uni Travel New Zealand University Games has grown to include 29 sports.
"The Games attract some of the best student athletes with top New Zealand sports people judging and refereeing events, and selecting New Zealand Universities sides. Many NZU sides will be competing overseas this year, an exciting development focus for USNZ and for the students it serves.
The majority of sports occur within a 3 km radius of Waikato University with most finals occurring on Saturday, 27 April.
List of sports: Aerobics, Badminton, Basketball, Canoe Polo, Debating, Fencing, Golf, Hockey, Inline Hockey, Karate, Mountain Biking, Multi-sport, Netball, Rowing, Rugby, Shooting, Soccer, Sport Climbing, Squash, Surfing, Table Tennis, Tae kwon Do, Tennis, Theatre Sports, Touch, Ultimate Frisbee, Underwater Hockey, Volleyball, Water Polo, Womens Rugby.
