StudyLink Steps Up To The Challenge

The Aotearoa Tertiary Students' Association (ATSA) is applauding the efforts of StudyLink after a student loans and allowances processing problem left thousands of students destitute last week. Not only was the problem fixed within 24 hours, StudyLink and banks have ensured that should the error occur again students will not miss out on their income.

“Four years ago students would not have received an acknowledgement of error let alone an apology,” said Julie Pettett President of ATSA. “Now students have an apology and protection if this occurs again. This is a marked difference in the culture of StudyLink.”

“Student allowances are at best inadequate, and students are reliant on getting them every week,” said Pettett. “Understanding the reliance students have on allowances is something ATSA is well aware of; we are pleased to see a government department recognise that fact also.”

ATSA believes the strong relationships that student associations and StudyLink have developed are responsible for averting what could have been a crisis for many students.

“ATSA would like to applaud the team at StudyLink for a prompt solution,” said Pettett. “The banks also deserve thanks for their recognition of the importance these payments have to students even though the individual value of student accounts may seem a pittance compared to their other business.”
