Education Action Group Demands lower Fees

In response to the Government's announcement that tertiary students fees will only be allowed to increase by a maximum of 5%, the Education Action Group calls upon the Government to show its commitment to reducing the barriers to education, by reducing fees by 5%.

" A 5% fee increase still translates into increasing the student debt burden, we call on the Labour Government to end the madness, and work to reduce fees," said Catherine May, EAG facilitator.

The Education Action Group is a coalition of students who campaign for the abolition of fees, and the re-introduction of a universal student allowance, based on the principle of equitable access to tertiary education as a public good.

"We will continue to lobby the Government and the University Council, to take the first steps to reverse the tide of student debt that has lead to a generation of the young people of New Zealand being in debt, to the tune of $6 billion dollars, before they even start their working lives," Catherine May said.
