Woolf Fisher Trust Valuable Student Scholarship

Woolf Fisher Trust Offers New Zealand’s Most Valuable Student Scholarship

The Woolf Fisher Trust today announced the establishment of a scholarship offering New Zealand graduates of high academic ability the opportunity to study for a doctorate at the Universities of Cambridge or Oxford.

“The Woolf Fisher Scholarship is worth around $100,000 per scholar per year.

That’s a long term commitment of $1 million towards postdoctoral study each year and is among the most valuable award of its kind ever offered to New Zealand graduates,” said Trust secretary, Dr Nigel Evans.

“The Trustees will select up to three Scholars each year, so each year the Trust will be investing more than one million dollars in these Scholars.”

“The Trust recognises that inevitably, the very best New Zealand graduates will want to test themselves at the highest level overseas. We have chosen to support fully the best of this elite group who wish to obtain a PhD or a D Phil at one or other of the world’s oldest and greatest English-speaking universities.”

The scholarship is broadly comparable with the long-established Rhodes Scholarship which offers study at Oxford University for up to three years.

However, the Woolf Fisher Scholarships are New Zealand-based and will be awarded only to outstanding doctoral scholars with strong connections to New Zealand and who demonstrate some of the qualities admired by Sir Woolf Fisher: integrity, leadership, bold vision and exceptional zeal, keenness and capacity for work.

“The Trust wants to ensure that Woolf Fisher Scholars maintain their links with New Zealand. So as well as covering all university fees and expenses and providing a generous living allowance, the Scholarships will fund and encourage an annual return trip to New Zealand.”

12 The late Sir Woolf Fisher, co-founder of Fisher and Paykel with Maurice Paykel, set up the Woolf Fisher Trust in 1960 to allow secondary school principals and teachers to travel overseas to study new developments in teaching practices. Nearly 1000 principals and teachers have since benefited from Sir Woolf’s legacy and vision.

“The Woolf Fisher Scholarships entrench this legacy by offering a wonderful opportunity to New Zealand’s outstanding university graduates.”

“The Scholarships will be available to students with first-class honours degrees, and who have studied for at least two years in a New Zealand secondary school.”

Applications close on 1 October this year and on 1 August from 2004. For further information and scholarship application forms please visit http://www.nzvcc.ac.nz/schols.html
