Upper Hutt Mayor Fights For Upper Hutt Schools
Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy is seeking an urgent meeting with cabinet ministers Trevor Mallard and Paul Swain seeking an assurance that the review of Upper Hutt schools will immediately cease.
“Trevor Mallard has announced a number of very good reasons why his schools review programme is to be halted” said Mayor Guppy, “but how can he then say in the same breath that the reviews that are currently underway but not completed, including Upper Hutt, will continue? Mr Mallard’s logic for halting the review throughout the rest of the country is just as compelling in relation to those areas such as Upper Hutt that are currently under review”. Mayor Guppy added that Upper Hutt has excellent schools that receive very satisfactory ERO reports and noted that Mr Mallard had already acknowledged that some parts of the Upper Hutt review were well ahead of time.
Mayor Guppy said that it was pleasing to see that the current Government was at last showing signs of realising that New Zealanders are sick of being dictated to on local issues but that this would be of little comfort to Upper Hutt people if the local school review was to continue. “Mr Mallard will have a real fight on his hands if he now proceeds with the Upper Hutt review” said Mayor Guppy. “The already strong opposition to the proposal in Upper Hutt will simply wind up another notch if Mr Mallard proceeds in the face of what is now his own admission that the review of schools generally is not a good idea at the present time”.
