Waikato Students to hold protest march against student debt

On Wednesday 19 May, Waikato students will be joining students from around New Zealand in a national day of protest action against student debt and calling on the government to introduce a living allowance for all students in the upcoming budget.

Waikato University students will march from Waikato University to Garden place and join students from Wintec at 1pm on Wednesday 19 May.

“Students have written and met with MPs, presented a petition from over 35,000 people for a living allowance for all students and still Helen Clark refuses to commit to a living allowance for all students,” said Sandy Pushpangalam, President of the Waikato Student Union.

“This protest is about showing Labour that students and the wider community will not sit-back and let student debt increase by a million dollars year after year.”

“We have good support from students, staff and the Waikato community who realise that no student should be forced to borrow to live” said Pushpangalam “Hamilton Mayor David Braithwate has written directly to the education minister supporting the students.”

Co-President of New Zealand University Students Association Fleur Fitzsimons and community leaders will address the protest.
