Fulbright Scholar to study Maori self-representation

Fulbright Scholar to study Maori self-representation in the 1950s Professor Chadwick Allen, Associate Professor of English in the Department of English at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, has been awarded the 2005 Fulbright scholarship.

Professor Allen's research project, entitled An indigenous 1950s: self-representation and the seeds of renaissance, will focus on Maori self-representation during the 1950s.

Using the Turnbull Library collections, he will investigate a wide range of texts - including published works of literature, archives and manuscripts, and government documents. He will also be looking for examples of Maori self-representation in Archives New Zealand, the Film Archive and in archives held by National Radio.

Professor Allen specialises in 20th-century American Indian and New Zealand Maori literatures and cultures, postcolonial literature and theory, and frontier studies and western literature. He is the author of Blood Narrative: indigenous identity in American Indian and Maori literary and activist texts.

The Fulbright scholarship finishes at the end of July 2005.
