Qualifications Authority welcomes feedback from teachers

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority has welcomed a report released today on what teachers think of NCEA, saying the feedback from teachers is incredibly valuable.

Chief Executive Karen Van Rooyen said the report gives the whole education sector, including the Qualifications Authority, a clear idea of the issues teachers have with the new system.

"Much of the feedback is consistent with what teachers have been telling us. I'm looking forward to discussing the report in more detail with the union so we can work together to make the necessary improvements for teachers and students. To this end, I have arranged a meeting with the PPTA next week."

"The concerns raised by teachers are important and we will sit down with the PPTA to talk about the best course of action," said Karen Van Rooyen.

The teachers surveyed raised concerns about things like external assessment, moderation, resources, and communication, but Karen Van Rooyen said, it is encouraging that the vast majority of teachers think NCEA is better than the old system.

"Teachers are excited by the opportunities NCEA offers for creative approaches to teaching and there is no desire to return to the previous system.

"The feedback clearly shows that NCEA is very motivating for many students and that it has the potential to be a fairer assessment system," said Karen Van Rooyen.
