NZQA Board Chair resigns

The Chair of the Board of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, Professor Graeme Fraser, last night advised the Government of his decision to resign as Chair.

The text of Professor Fraser's letter to Associate Education Minister, Hon David Benson-Pope, was as follows.

"The New Zealand Qualifications Authority has a significant task ahead of it as it seeks to resolve recent difficulties with the 2004 New Zealand Scholarship examinations.

"The Qualifications Authority is the subject of several reviews, two of which will made public tomorrow.

"While these reports indicate a number of causes for the recent difficulties, the top priority is to ensure the delivery of both scholarship and the NCEA occurs in a way that gives students, parents, teachers and the Government confidence, along with meeting the Qualifications Authority's other responsibilities.

"I believe the way forward would be assisted by the appointment of a Chair of the Qualifications Authority who can devote his or her time and energy to the challenges before it. Accordingly, I write to inform you that I resign as Chair of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, effective 12 Noon, Friday, 6 May 2005. A public announcement of my resignation will be made at that time."
