Scorching Summer for Student Job Search

The Canterbury branch of Student Job Search (SJS) is experiencing a record summer, gaining more long term duration jobs, higher revenue and placing even more students into skilled/course related jobs then the previous season.

So far this summer, SJS has already advertised over a thousand jobs and placed more than two thousand students into employment within the Canterbury region. These students earning a combined total of $7 million.

“We’re thrilled with the response from employers in the Canterbury region. The talents of our local students are being recognised with record numbers of high quality, well-paying employment opportunities over the 2005/06 summer period,” says regional SJS manager Lupe Leota.

“Businesses are feeling the effects of skills shortages nationwide so it’s pleasing to see employers responding to this by hiring students to fill those gaps. The FutureGrad programme has been particularly helpful in securing tertiary students to work in these skilled and technical roles,” Leota says.

The popularity of SJS’ service is evident nationwide, with many regional offices noting record levels of job advertisements. The increasing number of placements is great news for students who depend on steady work over the summer break to ease the burden of borrowing. However Leota stresses “Although we have already had a fantastic response from employers we’ll always need more jobs to meet our students demands and keep down student loans!”.

The boom in job advertisements at SJS is expected to continue well into the New Year.
