Shopping for a cause

Shopping for a cause

New Zealand’s well known ‘shopping for a cause’ campaign has its biggest year in 2006.

The fourth annual Westfield Shop for Your School campaign kicks off today,  Monday July 17 with its best-ever prize portfolio – more than $665,000 worth of educational technology and prizes from Apple and Canon.

In the four years of the campaign (including this year) simply by doing their eryday shopping at a Westfield centre, Kiwis have helped thousands of primary and intermediate students receive more than $2 million of educational resources and associated prizes.

“We all love a little extra value when we do our shopping,” says Westfield New Zealand National Marketing and Communications Manager, Linda Trainer. “To be able to assist local schools makes it even more rewarding.”

In 2005 more than 280 schools, nearly 90,000 students and 21,000 shoppers took part across NZ in the Shop For Your School campaign.

In 2006 the prize pool has been boosted to $665,000 and the programme enhanced to feature two categories – schools with up to 300 full time students and those with 301 or more.

Other innovations in 2006 include a ‘money can’t buy’ national prize when one lucky school gets to be on TV3 when an episode of the popular kids’ programme Sticky TV is filmed at their school.

Shoppers don’t miss out either; there are 27 iPod Nanos and nine 30GB iPods up for grabs.

Linda Trainer says anyone in the community can take part.

“Schools, their pupils, teachers, families and the local communities can all be involved in the Shop for Your School campaign. Schools are passionate about taking part and the opportunity to share in the significant prize pool.

“We all go shopping so why not help out your favourite school while you are at the centre?” she asks, and it’s free to take part.

Schools, friends and family can register at the Shop for Your School booths at any of the participating nine Westfield Shopping Centres in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, and Christchurch.

Participants can also donate points to a school in another city if that school is registered for the campaign.

Schools and shoppers can see how they’re doing by visiting the Westfield website at www.westfield.com/sfysnz.
