For immediate release

28 February 2007

Victoria University Debating Society Great Debate

The Victoria University Debating Society's 'Great Debate' will this year take place on Thursday, March 1 at 6.30pm in the Memorial Theatre at Victoria University.

The event is part of the university's Orientation festival and is sponsored by Tui.

The topic for this year's debate is: "That celebrities are great models"

Speaking for the Affirmative side will be Dr Grant Morris, a well-known law lecturer at Victoria University (with two fan clubs on campus), Jan Maree (New Zealand's only xxx comedian), and Wellington comedian Jerome Chandrahasen (a 2006 Billy-T nominee).

Their opposition will be Dai Henwood (a Billy-T award winner, and host of "Insert Video Here" on music channel C4), Wellington comedian Cori Gonzales Macuer (also a Billy-T award winner) and Josh Cameron (a Victoria University debater, and current captain of the New Zealand Universities' Impromptu Debating team).

The debate will be chaired by Wellington comedian Steve Wrigley.

With such an impressive line-up of speakers, the debate is sure to be extremely funny, interesting and thought-provoking.

The Great Debate is the major annual fundraiser for the Victoria University Debating Society and is always a great night out.

Tickets are $8 for members of the debating society, and $10 for non-members. They may be purchased from Orientation ticket offices at Victoria University or on the door on the night.

After the debate, crates of Tui and t-shirts will be given away to lucky ticket-holders. Get yours now!
