The Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia has announced the recipients of two scholarships for doctoral level research in education.
The 2007 scholarships, each worth AUD $10,000, were awarded to Eleanor Horton at the University of Newcastle and Robert Shaw at the University of Auckland.
Announcing the scholarships Society president Dr John Ozolins from the Australian Catholic University said, “We selected two outstanding scholars who presented very different approaches to the philosophy of education”.
Ms Horton is a nursing academic who is currently the academic coordinator at the Queensland University of Technology’s School of Nursing. Her study is supervised by Dr Mike Hazelton at the University of Newcastle.
“Ms Horton’s research is entitled ‘An exploration of the politics of Difference in Nursing’. She uses different theorists to interrogate issues of cultural safety in the nursing context” said Professor Ozolins.
Mr Shaw is a senior lecturer at the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand and a Porirua City Councillor. His study is supervised by Professor Robin Small at the University of Auckland.
Professor Ozolins said, “Robert Shaw’s project is entitled ‘Heideggerian pedagogy; horizons of disclosure acquired in schools’. This scholar’s challenge to current Western school practices has enormous potential for introducing new ways of thinking into school teaching”.
