Student Bevan Chan wins Jade Software Award

Jade Software Corporation announced today that Bevan Chan, a student from Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT), has won this year's Jade Scholar Prize. The Jade Prize of $2,000 is awarded to the student who achieves the highest grades at CPIT in two Software Engineering course papers.

John Ascroft, Jade's chief information officer who is responsible for the Jade Higher Education programme, said; "We congratulate Bevan on winning the Jade Prize in Software Engineering. This prize is one way Jade Software Corporation can recognise achievement and also invest in our future by encouraging students to study ICT and have a career in our industry."

This year's recipient Bevan Chan has completed a BA in Philosophy at the University of Canterbury and a BCom at Victoria University. He intends pursuing a career in the IT industry following the completion of his Bachelor of Information and Communication Technologies (BCIT) at CPIT next year.

"It's great to see successful IT companies like Jade supporting students with their study. This award will certainly make life a bit easier for me," said Bevan Chan.

Established in 1995, the Jade Prize is awarded annually to the student with the highest grades in course papers BCSE101 (Software Engineering 1A) and BCSE102 (Software Engineering 1B).

CPIT is one of New Zealand's largest tertiary institutions with three campuses in Christchurch and one in Auckland, and 2,000 staff providing tertiary education for around 30,000 students.

The CPIT School of Computing provides a number of courses including the BICT which is a three year full time course of study with a compulsory industry based project undertaken in the third year. A number of BICT graduates go on to secure employment with the company or business they complete their industry project with.

Mr Ascroft said, "Jade has hired more than 30 graduates over the past two years, 12 of whom completed their studies at CPIT. With some 250 employees in New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, the company is actively looking to recruit students who have relevant ICT qualifications."
