Tree planting ceremony commemorates MIT’s first principal
A tree planting ceremony was held at Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) on Thursday, 26 July 2007 to commemorate the death of the institute’s first head John Dick. Many guests attended the special ceremony, including Manukau City Council Mayor Sir Barry Curtis, former chief executive Bob Willyams and former chief executive Jack MacDonald. Mr Dick was principal of what was then called Manukau Technical Institute, which opened in Otara on 01 February 1970. The institute opened with 11 full time staff and 59 part time tutors. In 1987 the name was changed to Manukau Polytechnic and in 1995 it was changed to Manukau Institute of Technology. Today, MIT employs more than 900 staff and has three Otara-based campuses, a downtown Auckland-based NZ Maritime School campus, a Pukekohe-based Motorsport Centre and nine community-based computer learning centres across the greater Auckland region.
