Adult Learners’ Week/ He Tangata Mãtauranga

Media Release
Adult Learners’ Week/ He Tangata Mãtauranga
September 3-9 2007

Adult Learners’ Week He/ Tangata Mãtauranga will be launched at New Plymouth’s spectacular waterfront museum, Puke Ariki, on Monday September 3. The launch marks ten years of Adult Learners’ Week/ He Tangata Mãtauranga celebrations in Aotearoa.

This year’s theme, ‘Learning in Our Place Te Akoranga o Tãtou’, emphasises the uniqueness of community based adult and community education programmes (ACE). ACE programmes are tailored to the specific needs of the learner and take place wherever there is a learning need or a problem to solve.

In Aotearoa New Zealand there are thousands of opportunities to take part in adult learning. Each year around half a million adult New Zealanders participate in learning programmes which have the potential to empower individuals and transform communities socially and economically.

Whether it takes place in the farm paddock, church hall, marae or neighbourhood kitchen, adult learning happens everywhere.

Regional coordinators will be organising programmes of events in their communities throughout Adult Learners’ Week/ He Tangata Mãtauranga to celebrate adult learning and promote its many benefits.

Outstanding adult learners, teachers and providers in every region will be recognised through the presentation of awards and the McCombs–Rivers and Alison Broad Awards for Dynamic Community Learning will again be presented at the national launch.

Adult Learners’ Week/ He Tangata Mãtauranga is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) initiative supported by the Tertiary Education Commission and ACE providers at a local level. The Week also incorporates International Literacy Day on September 8.
