MEDIA RELEASE
WINTEC (WAIKATO INSTITUTE OF
TECHNOLOGY) FINALIST IN THE 2007 MĀORI LANGUAGE AWARDS
The Māori Language Week Awards – Ngā Tohu Wiki Reo Māori – are in their fourth year, and reward outstanding Māori Language Week participants. Each year the awards look at the many ways groups have used the language during Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. The award winners are announced on Te Rā mō Te Reo Māori, National Māori Language Day (14 September), at a special awards ceremony in Wellington. Wintec was category winner in 2005.
Wintec’s programme of events included innovative communications to all staff and students via email, the production of a Māori language newspaper ‘Pitoitoi’ lunch time speakers including recently retired Māori Language commissioner, Haami Piripi, public promotion of the week and the importance to New Zealand of the reo and wide ranging internal activities.
