New Zealand leaders equip faces
of the future with the keys to great
leadership

Secondary
school students from all over the upper North Island
converged in Auckland yesterday to hear from some of New
Zealand’s foremost leadership experts and inspiring role
models.
Close to 1300 secondary school students from 86 schools attended the event, held in Manukau’s Telstra Clear Pacific Events Centre, which was the second of the 2008 National Young Leaders’ Day events taking place throughout New Zealand.
The theme for the 2008 National
Young Leaders’ Days is ‘Own Your World. In line with
this theme students were challenged to accept that they are
never too young to play their part and no action in life is
insignificant.
For many students one of the highlights
was hearing from Jason Kerrison, lead singer of New Zealand
band Opshop. Jason spoke about what had influenced and
inspired the band, and mentioned their double-platinum album
Second Hand Planet was inspired by concern for the
environment. He then delighted the audience with an
impromptu performance of the band’s hit single ‘One
Day’.
Students also heard from Rob Harley
–documentary maker, Mark Inglis – adventurer, Lisa
Cescon – CEO for World Vision New Zealand and Dr Lester
Levy, Chief Executive of the Excelerator Leadership
Institute.
Dr Levy said people too often believe that
when a person has a position of authority, be it captain,
team leader, CEO or prime minister, they are automatically
leaders.
“The reality is that leadership is a reciprocal relationship between those that choose to lead and those that choose to follow,” said Dr Levy.
Annette Fale, general manger of the Halogen Foundation, the non-profit organisation behind the National Young Leaders’ Days said the day-long forum is designed to be both practical and inspirational.
“There is a strong sense of the baton being passed as an older generation of leaders impart their wisdom and experience to the emerging generation of young leaders,” said Mrs Fale, who was awarded a Sir Peter Blake 2007 Emerging Leader Award for her commitment to fostering youth leadership.
“Students leave the day well equipped with the knowledge, tools and motivation they need to lead their fellow students, school or community. We know from previous years that this can not only change the lives of the participants, but the ripple effect of what they learn spreading through their school and community means that the benefits are felt by thousands of other people.”
Now in its 8th year, the National Young Leaders’ Days have empowered more than 11,000 secondary school students from schools throughout New Zealand.
The final 2008 National Young Leaders’ Day for secondary school students will take place in Wellington (March 28th) while the National Young Leaders Days for primary and intermediate students will take place in April and May with two events in both Auckland and Wellington, as well as an event in Christchurch, Dunedin and Rotorua.
