PPTA welcomes delay of NCEA review

PPTA congratulates education minister Anne Tolley for listening to the profession’s concerns over the tight time-frame of the NCEA standards review.

Junior vice president Kate Gainsford said the review was far too important to rush.

“There are careful decisions that need to be made about the achievement standards, particularly in assuring teachers’ workloads will not be adversely affected,” she said.

Gainsford said there had been a “huge consensus” among the education sector over the need to extend the timeline for the review.

“Members have been calling for more time, resources and greater support at PPTA conferences over a number of years.

“It is good that, as a new minister, Anne Tolley has shown she is prepared to listen to the sector. Secondary teachers are working through the implications of the new curriculum and need to get that out of the way before confronting the issues around achievement and unit standards,” Gainsford said.

PPTA was supportive of the comprehensive nature of the review and particularly the involvement of members of the secondary subject associations.

“Reinstating Senior Subject Advisors to support implementation would be the logical next step”, she said.
