Schools Go Head-To-Head In Print Awards
Inter-school rivalry in the Hawkes Bay has been taken away from the academic and sports field into the rarefied atmosphere of top-quality printing.
The school magazines of Taradale High School and Napier Boys’ High are coming head-to-head in the New Zealand Pride In Print Awards -- the “Oscars” for the print and packaging industries in this country.
Taradale’s “The Brooch” and Napier Boys’ High’s “Scindian” have both been entered by APN Print Central of Waipukurau for this year’s Awards, in the category for sheetfed printing of four or more colours, bound by any method, 16 pages or more.
Awards Manager Sue Archibald said that it was refreshing to see small, local magazines get prominence alongside works prepared for multinational companies.
“Part of the joy of the Pride In Print Awards is that they embrace the small publications from the local communities as well as the major glossy magazines prepared by huge companies. It is not just the ‘big boys’ who win awards.
“Last year a small company from Auckland created the Supreme Award Finalist Packaging entry that was further awarded on the international stages of Europe. A true example of innovation, adaptability and quality.
“So to see two magazines appear from neighbouring Hawkes Bay schools is really what Pride In Print is all about – seeing local printers take a pride in the quality of the work done for their local communities,” she said.
However the Hawkes Bay rivals will have to wait until May 8 to know if they have won any plaudits for APN Print Central.
That is when the Pride In Print Awards Night will be held in Wellington, when hundreds of entrants from across all areas of print and packaging will know if they have been successful.
All winning work will be on display in the Wellington Convention Centre – in the heart of Wellington -- for five days after the Award winners are announced, and the Supreme Award Winner and Supreme Award Finalists will also be placed on display at the PacPrint 2009 exhibition in Melbourne in late May.
