Despite the recession it is not all doom and
gloom on the funding front for those in the field of Mental
Health. With their announcement of the details of four
categories of funding for study or research in the field of
Mental Health the Vic Davis Memorial Trust has now opened
applications and expects to distribute more that $100,000
annually.
According to Trust chairman Mike Shepherd, Vic Davis was a real philanthropist with a special interest in the field of Mental Health. “This Trust offers individuals and organisations a significant opportunity to engage in study or research in this field and we look forward to allocating the generous funds.” All applications must be received by 31st August.
There are
four distinct categories of grants and scholarships
available through the Trust including:
1. Scholarships
for individuals wishing to undertake training as a mental
health practitioner
2. Scholarships for individuals who
are about to study at post graduate diploma or masters level
in the field of mental health
3. Research fellowships for
individuals researching in the field of mental
health
4. Research grants for organisations researching
in the field of mental health
The individuals must be New Zealand residents and any organisation applying for a research grant should be New Zealand based.
With regard to the two study scholarships, preference will be given to those applicants who are able to demonstrate an association with the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Individuals applying for scholarships must be able to demonstrate an interest in the field of mental health.
With regard to the two research categories the research and host organisation may be local, regional or national. Research applications will only be considered from individuals or groups who have a prior history of work in the field of mental health.
The scope
of the research considered by the Trust includes:
o The
nature of mental health
o The origin and causes of mental
health disorders
o Prevention of mental health
disorders
o Diagnosis
o Treatment and cure
