Albany Students’ Association applauds Massey University

Massey University has announced that they will spend $50,000 on new bursaries for second semester in 2009. These bursaries will be available for those who are affected by the current economic climate. Vice-chancellor Steve Maharey said anyone whose employment was affected by economic downturn – or was likely to be – could apply when they enrolled or immediately if they were a current student, either internal or extramurally.

There will be 50 bursaries each worth $1,000 each. The University “felt it was important to recognise that many people are either having to review their career paths or face uncertainty,” Maharey said.

Albany Students’ Association President, Rawa Karetai said, “In such times of a recession, it is initiatives like this that we need. It is a shame that the University couldn’t provide more, but it is great to see that the University is in touch with both current and potentially future students and is definitely trying to help.”

The National Government could learn a thing or two from Massey University; putting money towards education is a great way of investing into our society’s future and New Zealand’s infrastructure. Hopefully the Government will consider this as they write the budget.
