Nz Uni Students Head To Berlin To Compete In Business Awards

AUT Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) will represent New Zealand in Berlin this October after winning the 2009 SIFE New Zealand National Competition title on Saturday.

This is the third consecutive win for AUT, who went on to compete in New York in 2007 and Singapore in 2008. The runner-up teams came from Waikato University and Victoria.

Tony Price, the NZ CEO of SIFE was impressed with the level of competition and project that the students had completed and looks forward to other Universities competing next year.

SIFE is an international non-profit organization that works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilise university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders.

Participating students form teams on their university campuses and apply business concepts to develop outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need.

A national competition provides a forum for teams to present the results of their projects, and to be evaluated by business leaders serving as judges.

New Zealand chairman, John Cunningham, says Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) take on the brief of creating economic opportunity for others while developing business skills in a real world context.

"They have to come up with real-life projects, which must be genuinely sustainable. Students write business plans, set realistic budgets, recruit helpers and often include businesses for mentoring and sponsorship whilst running the project."

John Cunningham says the international clout behind SIFE is significant, with representation at Chairman or CEO level from organisations such as Unilever, Coca-Cola, Hershey's, Wal-Mart, Campbell's, 3M and the Tiger Woods Foundation.

The initiative has been operating in New Zealand for several years and local backers include the EMA, HSBC, Korn Ferry, Progressive, Cryovac and BIC.

KPMG is involved globally and the New Zealand arm hosts the national competition each year.
