Winning Waikato Scientist Saving New Zealand Estuaries

Research into the sustainable management of New Zealand estuaries and coastal waters has earned Malcolm Green of NIWA the Environmental Science Award at the 2009 Kudos Awards.

Dr Green’s work was recognised at the Kudos Awards ceremony held last week at the Narrows Landing, Hamilton.

Dr Green has developed a ‘composite model’ which collects and organises information to make explicit predictions about the future state and health of estuaries. This model is currently being used by Auckland Regional Council and Environment Bay of Plenty to plan ‘estuary-friendly’ catchment development schemes.

Dr Green’s ‘composite model’ represents a significant advance in environmental science and will help to create and manage healthy, resilient and functional estuarine ecosystems in New Zealand.

The Environmental Science Award recognises a contribution to environmental research in the Waikato and New Zealand and is sponsored by Environment Waikato.

The Kudos Awards celebrated Waikato’s finest scientists at a ceremony held at the Narrows Landing, Hamilton, on 14 October. The awards recognise the region’s most exciting science discoveries over seven award categories including medical, agricultural, environmental, science educator, emerging scientist, entrepreneurial science and lifetime achievement.

The cash prizes are used to advance science in the Waikato region and are sponsored by the Waikato District Health Board, Hamilton City Council, Environment Waikato, WINTEC, Calder and Lawson House of Travel and the University of Waikato.
