Scientists awarded two-year research fellowships

Five New Zealand researchers have been awarded prestigious James Cook Research Fellowships to undertake concentrated work in their fields of expertise for two years.

The fellowships are administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand on behalf of the Government and are awarded to "forward thinking" researchers who will make a significant contribution to New Zealand ’s knowledge base.

They allow researchers to concentrate on their chosen research for two years without the additional burden of administrative and teaching duties.

The new Fellows are:

• In biological sciences - Professor Peter Lockhart from the Allan Wilson Centre, Massey University for his research entitled “Adaptation of the New Zealand flora”.

• In health sciences - Associate Professor Parry Guilford from the Cancer Genetics laboratory at University of Otago , for his research entitled “Epigenetic approaches to cancer prevention and therapy”.

• In social sciences - Associate Professor Leanne Woodward from University of Canterbury , for her research entitled “Neural and social pathways leading to neurodevelopmental risk”.

• In physical sciences - Professor Tim Stern from Victoria University of Wellington for his research entitled “Crustal structure and tectonics of continental New Zealand ”.

• Also in physical sciences - Professor Mike Steel from University of Canterbury , for his research entitled “Mathematical foundations for inferring large evolutionary trees”.

The fellowships begin in early 2010.
