School Trustee Elections, coordinators on mission
2010 School Trustee Elections, coordinators on a
mission….
The 2010 School Trustee Election coordinators around the country are on a mission to encourage strong leaders to stand for election for our schools.
As part of their job, the nine election coordinators are working with schools and communities in 11 regions, to ensure that people come forward to stand as school trustees in the upcoming 2010 School Trustee Elections.
The momentum has really picked up now that nominations have opened. For most schools voting will close at noon on 7 May and the results will be declared on 13 May.
The regional election co-ordinators are: Lyn Ferguson (Northland); Chris France (Auckland); Diane Carson (Waikato); Viv Taylor (Bay of Plenty/Central East); Liz Swinbanks (Central West): Lynne Currie (Wellington/Wairarapa); Kate Tailby (Marlborough/Nelson/West Coast); Carol Burton (Canterbury); and Owen Edgerton (Otago/Southland).
The 2010 School Trustee Election coordinators are supporting schools to find people with a wide range of skills and experiences who can work as part of a team, to support the future education of our children and young adults.
Election Project manager Elaine Hines says as the campaign heats up, schools will be out talking to the wider community, encouraging people to put their names forward.
“People from the wider community, including parents, can be nominated for election to a school board.”
The 2010 School Trustee Elections campaign aims to identify and attract sufficient candidates with the right skills and experiences to ensure that each school can elect a high quality board.
“The 2010 School Trustee Elections are an extremely significant event for schools as our board of trustees determine the vision of the school and have a very important part in making sure every child achieves their potential.”
The school trustee elections are New Zealand’s biggest democratic event and this is the eighth election since the introduction of self-managing schools in 1989. The triennial call for school governance is about “Strong leaders make strong schools”.
