Eighth house built by NorthTec students in Kaitaia
Eighth house built by NorthTec students in Kaitaia on the
move
Kaitaia residents and visitors to
the town may have thought NorthTec was on the move earlier
this month when a house was shifted from the campus by
Whangarei House Movers.
In fact, it was the eighth house that has been built by Kaitaia construction students over the past five years and then on-sold.
Kaitaia construction tutor Murray Smith said that the house was built on-site at NorthTec’s Kaitaia campus by 12 students in semester 2 of last year during their 34-week course. “This is an even more impressive achievement on the part of the students when you take into account the fact that the 34-week course includes classroom-based theory as well as practical experience.”
The house is now settling into its new role as a family home 30km north of Kaitaia.
“This year 16 students will be working on a larger, 118m², 3-bedroom house. Building a house is a great learning experience for the students. It provides them with practical skills that they can use in their future training or work environments and gives them a real sense of achievement. We also get to provide something of value to someone in the community.”
