Scholarships for A-grade university students

Media Release

Scholarships for A-grade university students

It’s a great day to be an A-grade graduate or post-graduate student – applications open today for the 2011 Freemasons University Scholarships, totaling $230,000.

Eight post graduate scholarships of $10,000 each and 25 university scholarships of $6,000 each will be claimed by students studying at Auckland, AUT, Waikato,  Massey, Victoria, Canterbury, Lincoln and Otago universities.

There are just three stipulations for entry: applicants must be students completing their degree no matter the subject or faculty; they must be A-grade students; and they must actively take part in a non-academic community activity.

The Freemasons Charity is the country’s largest, privately-funded scholarship programme which in 33 years has given $3.5 million in scholarships to 922 university students.

Freemasons affiliation is not, and never has been, an application requirement.

Laurence Milton, Freemasons Grand Secretary, said recipients need to be high-achieving young people who recognise the importance and involvement of community service as well as academic success.

“With a 120 year history in New Zealand, Freemasons have developed, and are well-known for, a strong tradition of caring in the community.

“Our university scholarship programme, funded by Freemasons from all walks of life, recognises excellence in education and participation in community activities,” said Mr Milton.

Applications are open until 1 October 2010 and will be awarded in May 2011. Forms are available from universities or can be downloaded from the homepage of the Freemasons website, http://www.freemasons.co.nz/charity/
