Ministry Urges PPTA To Continue Bargaining

The Ministry of Education has urged the PPTA to come back to the bargaining table and work towards an affordable and realistic settlement.

“The only way to reach settlement is at the table,” said Group Manager Education Workforce Fiona McTavish. “There’s no need or justification for either party to walk away.”

“The Ministry’s offer is entirely realistic in the current economic climate, especially considering the teacher salary increases of recent years. We’re disappointed the PPTA doesn’t recognise this,” she said.

“The union will not achieve its goals through the media or by refusing to engage,” she said.

“The Government is clear about its expectation for State sector restraint in pay bargaining,” said Fiona McTavish. “We’ve seen that reflected in other recent State sector settlements and expect the same from the teachers’ unions.”

“The Government can’t afford the generous teacher salary increases of recent years. The PPTA has received this message very clearly many times.”

“The Ministry continues to be ready to bargain and encourages the PPTA back to the table,” she said.
