Children’s Commissioner’s report welcomed
Children’s Commissioner’s report on under
two year olds care and education welcomed by early childhood
groups
The Early Education Federation welcomes the Commissioner for Children’s report which calls for better early childhood education services for children under two.
The report, which looks into the care and education of infants and toddlers, says current minimum standards are too low. In particular it calls for smaller group sizes (no more than eight) and adult to child ratios of one to three in centres and in home based services.
The Early Education Federation, which represents 18 national organisations involved in early childhood education, says the recommendations are sound.
“This report looks at
what is best for children, and says we can do better” says
Federation spokesperson
The report also says knowledgeable and skilled staff are needed to work with this age group.
And it calls for the government to consider improving parental leave provisions to make them more generous, more flexible, and applicable to more children.
The Early Education Federation welcomes policies that support families with young children, and which give parents more opportunity to spend time at home with their children before returning to work.
